Welcome to term 4

Welcome back to SALT Club for term 4! We have lots of exciting things planned for the final term of 2011 and (of course) the lead up to Christmas.

We will be having two 'all ages' services this term (30th Oct & 4th Dec). This is a great time for everyone in our church family to join together in worship. In preparation for these services, kids attending SALT Club will have opportunities to contribute their own prayers, thoughts and impressions about God, Christ and Church 'stuff'. These will then be shared with the rest of the congregation during the 'all ages' services.

As always, each of our groups will also be discovering what the Bible has to say to kids living in 2011 and how God remains relevant even in today's fast paced, D.S driven world.

Salt Club in Term 3

It has been a busy term for SALT Club so far! Children in each of our three groups have been learning about different aspects of the Bible and how it relates to their everyday life.

Fireflies (4 year old pre-school – grade 1) are learning about the Gospel of Luke and how Christ continues to show his love for us each day.

Comets (grades 2 – 4) have just completed a series of ‘Living with Jesus’ looking at the experiences of the disciples in the Gospels of Mark and John. They are about to embark on ‘Adventures with God’ learning about some of the events in Acts.

Illuminators (grades 5 – 7) have been making shadow puppets and learning about Moses so they can see the way in which Moses was a shadow of what came through Jesus.

"Illuminators" Reflect...

In Illuminators  we have been talking about why we came onto this earth, and how we are effectively stealing His world. The world being His, because He made it. But we have taken the world and done what we want with something that isn’t ours. Since God made the earth, we should do what He wants and made us to do.
Stephen Charles

In Illuminators,  SALT Club 2011, semester 1, we have been learning about what God has to say to us, and with prizes of Clinkers along the way, everyone has been willing to join in. One of the things that I learnt was that God helps us know how to be good friends. We played a game where we had to lead a blindfolded person through a course of landmines.
Josh McKinley

Before Easter we learnt about why Good Friday, the day we remember when Jesus died, is good. This is because Jesus’ death on the cross was the way God dealt with our sin and
brought us forgiveness. Our memory verse that day was: "Christ died for sins, once for all the
righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God."  1Peter 3:18
Stewart Bedford

In Illuminators we have been memorizing memory verses. For example one verse was John 11:25-26: "I am the resurrection and the life, He who believes in Me will live even though
he dies, and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die." We have been looking up things in the Bible and of course munching Clinkers. We have been doing lots of clinkerlicious activities in Illuminators!

In Illuminators this year, we have been looking at how God made the world. It is an interesting topic to learn about: God made the world, God runs the world and the world belongs to God.
We have a memory verse on this topic: "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory, and honour and power, for you created all things and by your will they were created and have their being."  Revelation 4:11
Eloise Smith

When I think of Illuminator s, I think of Clinkers and this makes me want to remember my memory verse. One time we played a game where we were blindfolded and we had to try to walk to the other side without touching the newspapers which were like mines. It was much easier when I was guided by my partner like God guides us through life.

"Fireflies" Sessions in Salt Club

During term 1 the children in the ‘Fireflies’ group have been studying chapters 25, 27, 28, 29, 31, 32 and 33 from Genesis.

The first five sessions in this unit of kids@church (our sessions are based on this CEP material) covered the story of Jacob and Esau. It commences with their birth as twin sons to Isaac and Rebekah, through the deception by Jacob, to gain his brother’s birthright and blessing from Isaac. Esau’s anger resulted in Jacob fleeing from Canaan to live with his Uncle Laban. En route he dreamt of a ladder ascending to Heaven with angels. Another deceit was Laban substituting his elder daughter, Leah, in place of the younger Rachel, at Jacob’s wedding. This meant that a second term of seven years had to be worked to gain the hand of Rachel. Finally, after many years, Jacob was told by God to return to his old home. He was fearful of his brother Esau as he did not think he would have forgotten or forgiven Jacob’s
deception. However, despite the fact that news arrived of Esau advancing to meet them with 400 men, Jacob prayed to God. He admitted his unworthiness. Later that day the two brothers were reconciled and embraced.

During some of the sessions we encourage children to try to memorise key verses. The key verses for this unit were: “I will watch over you.” (Gen.28:15) and “Lord, you are kind and good.” (Psalm 69:16)

The start of the year has been a settling in one for the nine children in Fireflies. Ranging in ages from aged 4 years to Grade 1, with some turning 7 in 2011, their attention spans and capabilities are quite varied. The kids@church material has lots of suggestions for craft and other activities.  In recent weeks we have set up sheet tents to sit in, or have dressed up and packed our animals for the journey back to Canaan, to introduce a sense of drama and anticipation.

The children each have their own ‘Promise Box’ with their name on it. These have been very well received by the children. Each child receives a mini poster corresponding to the large teaching one for each lesson, with reminders of God’s promises, for example, “God always listens to my prayers” and “God will never leave me”.  I know that when this unit is completed the children will look forward to taking their boxes home  and sharing them with their families.
